Short answer
Claude has a free plan, Pro at $20 a month ($17 billed annually; €18 or €15 from Spain, before tax), Max at $100 (5x Pro usage) or $200 (20x), Team seats from $20 to $125 a month and Enterprise at $20 per seat plus usage at API rates. Claude Code comes with every paid plan, and Max and Team include monthly API credits. Usage resets every five hours with weekly limits on top, so there is no fixed message count. We compare published plans, not answer quality.
Prices and limits change often: check the vendor's page before you pay. How we make money.
Claude pricing in October 2026 runs from $0 for the free plan to $200 a month for one person, with team and enterprise plans billed per seat. This page lists what Anthropic publishes for each plan (price, usage, models and features), checked on October 28, 2026 against its pricing page, help center and release notes. For how Claude compares with its main rival, see Claude vs ChatGPT.
What this page is not: a quality ranking or a buying recommendation. How we checked: everything here comes from Anthropic's own documentation, and we do not score how well the assistant performs.
How much does Claude cost?
Claude has five kinds of plan. The table gives the US price and, where the pricing page shows it, the price seen from Spain. Anthropic states that prices shown do not include applicable tax.
Table: Claude plans and prices (October 28, 2026)
| Plan | United States | Spain (before tax) | Billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | €0 | None |
| Pro | $20/month, or $17/month billed annually ($200 up front) | €18/month, or €15/month billed annually (€180 up front) | Monthly or annual |
| Max 5x | $100/month | from €90/month | Monthly only |
| Max 20x | $200/month | not listed (the page shows "from €90") | Monthly only |
| Team, Standard seat | $25/seat/month, or $20 billed annually | €21.04/seat/month, or €18 billed annually | Monthly or annual |
| Team, Premium seat | $125/seat/month, or $100 billed annually | €105.23/seat/month, or €90 billed annually | Monthly or annual |
| Enterprise | $20/seat/month plus usage at API rates, 20-seat minimum | not listed | Annual only |
Pro is the only individual plan with an annual discount. Max is sold monthly only, and Enterprise is billed annually. Prices vary by region: Anthropic's help center says some regions include tax in the displayed price and others add it at checkout, so the number on the checkout screen is the one that counts.
Is Claude free?
Yes. The free plan costs nothing and includes chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, creating files and running code, memory across conversations, connectors to other apps and Artifacts. It gives access to the Sonnet and Haiku models, up to five projects and the same voice mode and incognito chats as paid plans.
What the free plan does not include, according to Anthropic's comparison table: Claude Code, Research, Claude Science, Claude Dashboards (in beta), Claude in Chrome, and the Microsoft 365 and Outlook integrations. Claude Design, Slides and Docs are listed on every plan, Free included. Usage is limited, which Anthropic describes as enough for everyday questions.
What does Claude Pro include, and is it worth it?
Pro adds more usage and more features. Anthropic says Pro gives "at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free". It also adds Claude Code, Claude Science, Claude Dashboards (in beta), Research, projects beyond the free plan's cap of five, Claude in Chrome, Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook, the option to hand off and schedule tasks, and the Opus model. The Fable model is available on Pro through usage credits.
Whether it is worth paying depends on what you do, not on a price comparison. The documented triggers are practical: you keep hitting the free usage limit, you want Claude Code, or you need the Microsoft 365 and Chrome integrations. If you only ask a few questions a day, the free plan is the documented fit. To test the fit cheaply, use the free plan for a week and watch the usage meter in Settings.
Claude Max: 5x or 20x?
Max is for people who use Claude all day. It includes everything in Pro plus a choice between 5x and 20x the usage of Pro per five-hour session, higher output limits, early access to advanced features and priority access at high-traffic times. Fable is included in Max, where it can use up to 50% of the weekly limits. Since October 7, 2026, Max also includes monthly API credits for your own apps and agents on the Claude Platform: $100 a month on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x. They refresh each billing cycle, do not roll over and do not cover interactive Claude Code. Free, Pro and Enterprise plans do not get them.
Max 5x costs $100 a month and Max 20x costs $200 a month, per Anthropic's help center. Max has no annual option. The pricing page itself only shows "From $100" for both, so use the help center or your checkout page for the 20x price.
Claude Team and Enterprise plans
Team is for small organizations. It needs at least two members and supports up to 150 seats, with two seat types. Standard seats cost $25 per month ($20 on annual billing) and include 1.25x the Pro plan's per-session usage. Premium seats cost $125 per month ($100 on annual billing) and include 6.25x. Both seat types include all available models, Claude Code, enterprise search and connectors to tools such as Google Drive, Gmail, Calendar, GitHub, Microsoft 365 and Slack, according to the Team plan help article. Team plans also get monthly API credits: $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled into one balance capped at $500 a month.
Enterprise costs $20 per seat per month plus usage billed at API rates, so the bill grows with the models and tasks your team runs. It is billed annually, with a 20-seat minimum on the pricing page, and includes everything in Team plus security and administration features: SCIM, audit logs, custom data retention and role-based access. Anthropic says you can start self-serve or contact sales for a quote.
One inconsistency to know about: the Team help article lists a 200k context window, while the pricing page lists a context window of "up to 1M, varies by model" for the individual plans. Check the plan comparison before you depend on a long context in a team plan.
How do Claude's usage limits work?
Claude does not give a fixed number of messages. Every plan has limits that reset on a rolling five-hour session window, and paid plans add weekly limits on top. Your activity on the web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code all draws from the same pool. How much you can do depends on the length and complexity of the conversation, the model and the features you use. Anthropic also reserves the right to limit usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps, to give all users fair access.
When you reach a limit you have three options: wait for the reset, move to a higher plan or, on paid plans, turn on usage credits to keep working at standard API rates. Your current position is shown in Settings under Usage. Our guide to what a token is explains the unit behind these limits and API bills.
Which models does each plan include?
Table: Claude models and context by plan
| Item | Free | Pro | Max 5x / 20x |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonnet and Haiku | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Opus | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fable | No | With usage credits | Up to 50% of weekly limits |
| Context window | Up to 1M, varies by model | Up to 1M, varies by model | Up to 1M, varies by model |
Anthropic's model names change every few months, so treat this table as a snapshot. The context sizes by model are in Anthropic's context-window documentation: for example, Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Fable 5.1 have a 1M-token window, while Claude Sonnet 4.5 has 200k.
Claude Code and the API: subscription or pay as you go?
Claude Code is included in every paid plan and shares the plan's usage limits, so your terminal sessions and your chats draw from one pool. For heavy coding sessions, Anthropic also offers pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account. The Pro plan does not include API usage. Max and Team include the monthly API credits described above, which you claim by linking a Claude Console organization; they cover the API, the Console Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK, not interactive Claude Code.
Table: Claude API prices per million tokens (Anthropic, October 26, 2026)
| Model | Input | Cache read | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Fable 5.1 | $10 | $0.25 | $50 |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $0.20 | $20 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $0.10 | $10 |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K tokens) | $0.10 | $0.01 | $0.50 |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | $1 | $0.10 | $5 |
The Batch API takes 50% off both input and output. Above 100,000 prompt tokens, Claude Haiku 5.5 costs $0.50 input and $2.50 output. Anthropic also documents that Claude 4.7 and later models use a newer tokenizer that produces about 30% more tokens for the same text, which raises the real cost of the same prompt on those models.
To see where the break-even sits, we ran three sample workloads through our own LLM API cost calculator. These are our calculations, not Anthropic figures, and they include the 30% tokenizer effect on the models that use the newer tokenizer (all of them except Haiku 4.5):
Table: sample monthly API cost (our calculation)
| Workload | Sonnet 5.5 | Opus 5.5 | Haiku 5.5 | Haiku 4.5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 300 requests, 2,000 tokens in, 500 out | $3.51 | $7.02 | $0.18 | $1.35 |
| 1,500 requests, 4,000 in, 800 out | $31.20 | $62.40 | $1.56 | $12.00 |
| 3,000 requests, 30,000 in (70% cached), 2,000 out | $156.39 | $312.78 | $8.23 | $63.30 |
Light use is far cheaper through the API than through a $20 plan, and heavy agent-style use costs more than a $100 plan would. On Max, the first $100 or $200 of API use each month comes out of the plan's API credits. A plan has a ceiling on usage; the API does not, and you pay for every token. Neither is better in general: it depends on how many tokens you really use. If you build software around Claude, see what an agent is before you estimate costs, because agents loop and can multiply token use.
Does Claude train on your conversations?
Anthropic's comparison table lists model training as "Opt-out" on the Free, Pro and Max plans, so an opt-out is available. Review the setting when you create the account and again after any policy update.
Which Claude plan should you choose?
- You ask a few questions a day: the free plan is the documented fit.
- You hit the free limit or want Claude Code: Pro, monthly first, annual if you stay.
- You work with Claude for hours every day: Max 5x, and Max 20x only if you reach the 5x limits.
- You are a team of two to 150: Team, with Premium seats only for the people who use it most.
- You need audit logs, SCIM or custom data retention: Enterprise.
- You compare against other assistants: see ChatGPT alternatives.
What to check before you pay
Prices before tax can differ from what you pay, so read the checkout total. Annual billing saves money only if you will use the plan for the whole year. Usage limits are not message counts, so use the usage page rather than guessing. Plan names, models and limits change often; this page is reviewed monthly and every change is logged in the history below.

What may change
- Plan names, prices, models and usage limits change every few months; this page is reviewed monthly.
- Euro prices depend on region and tax: the pricing page shows Spain's prices before tax, and Max 20x is not listed in euros.
- Anthropic's pricing page and the Team help article do not always agree (for example on the context window): check both before relying on a team plan.

What happens when I reach Claude's usage limit?
Limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans also have weekly limits. At a limit you can wait for the reset, move to a higher plan or, on paid plans, turn on usage credits to keep working at standard API rates. Settings under Usage shows where you stand.
Is the Claude API cheaper than a subscription?
It depends on how many tokens you use. In our sample calculation, 1,500 requests a month of 4,000 tokens in and 800 out on Sonnet 5.5 cost about $31 through the API, against $20 for Pro or $100 for Max 5x. Light use is cheaper by API; heavy agent-style use costs more than a plan. Max also includes $100 or $200 a month in API credits.
