Short answer
Claude vs Gemini on October 10, 2026: Claude Pro costs $20 a month and Google's Pro plan $19.99, and both top plans cost about $100 or $200. Google adds a $4.99 tier, 5 TB of storage and Gemini inside Gmail and Docs; Claude adds Claude Code to every paid plan and API credits on Max. Both advertise about 1 million tokens of context. Claude uses your chats for training only if you allow it; Gemini does while Keep Activity is on.
Prices and limits change often: check the vendor's page before you pay. How we make money.
Claude vs Gemini is closer on price than most comparisons suggest and further apart on everything around the chat window. On October 10, 2026, Claude Pro costs $20 a month and Google's Pro plan $19.99, and both top plans cost about $100 or $200 for 5 or 20 times the usage. What differs is what comes with them: Google bundles 5 TB of storage, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs and a cheaper $4.99 tier, while Claude bundles Claude Code and, on Max, monthly API credits. They also handle your chats differently for training. This comparison uses only the two companies' own pages, checked that day (Google's plans and privacy page again on October 29, 2026), and does not rank answer quality, which we have not tested.

Claude's prices do not include tax; Google's page does not say either way. Both companies change plans often, so check the checkout screen before paying.
Prices and what each plan includes
Claude has three personal tiers. The free plan includes chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation and code execution, memory, connectors to other apps and Artifacts. Pro adds more usage, Claude Code, Research, unlimited Projects, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, scheduled tasks and the Opus models. Anthropic's help center lists Max at $100 for 5 times Pro's usage and $200 for 20 times, with higher output limits, priority access at busy times and $100 or $200 a month in credits for the Claude API. Only Pro can be paid yearly.
Google has four. The free Gemini app uses Google's Flash-Lite model and still includes Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems, which Google is turning into skills: on personal accounts, Gems become read-only on November 17, 2026 and are removed on December 17. Google's Plus plan ($4.99) moves you to the Flash model, doubles the free limits and adds Gemini in Gmail and Vids. Google's Pro plan ($19.99) adds Gemini 4 Argon and the Pro model, four times the free limits, Docs among the apps with Gemini, Gemini in Chrome, the Jules coding agent, 5 TB of Google storage and YouTube Premium Lite. Google's Ultra plan adds the highest access to those models, early access to Tasks in Gemini in select countries, storage from 20 TB and the full YouTube Premium plan.
The value question is mostly about what you already pay for. If you pay for Google storage or YouTube Premium anyway, Google's Pro plan replaces part of that bill. If you write code, Claude Pro includes Claude Code in the same subscription. Our guides to Claude plans and prices and to ChatGPT vs Gemini go plan by plan.
Models, context window and output
The current Claude models are Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. On Anthropic's models page all four have a 1 million token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens per request through the API, and a training data cutoff of June 2026. In the apps, Free gets Sonnet and Haiku, Pro adds Opus, and Fable 5.1 is available on Pro only through paid usage credits and on Max within half of the weekly limits.
On Google's side, the app plans no longer give version numbers except for Gemini 4 Argon: they name the Flash-Lite model (free), the Flash model (from Google's Plus plan) and Gemini 4 Argon and the Pro model (from Google's Pro plan), and further down the same page calls 3.1 Pro its leading model. Google's developer documentation gives Gemini 4 Argon a context window of 1,048,576 tokens for input and output combined, with up to 65,536 output tokens by default and up to 1,048,576 with its long decode option, and gives Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini 3.1 Pro an input limit of 1,048,576 tokens and an output limit of 65,536 tokens; 3.1 Pro is still listed as a preview model in the API.
So on paper both sides read about 1 million tokens, roughly the length of several long books, and Claude's API models can write about twice as much in one answer. Two cautions: the app limits are not always the API limits, and a context window says how much a model can read, not how well it uses it. Our explainer on what a context window is covers both points.
Coding with Claude and Gemini
This is where the two subscriptions differ most. Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent for the terminal and editors, is included in Pro and Max and, in Anthropic's words, "shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan", so long coding sessions and chats draw from one pool. When that pool runs short, the options are Max or pay-as-you-go API credits. Our guide on how to use Claude Code covers the setup.
Google's Pro plan includes Jules, which Google describes as an asynchronous coding agent, with higher limits than the free tier, and entry-level rate limits in Google Antigravity, its agentic development platform; Ultra raises both. Google's Plus plan does not list either.
If you build software rather than chat, the APIs are billed separately from all of these plans: see Claude API pricing and Gemini API pricing.
Privacy: how each one uses your chats
Claude. Anthropic's privacy center says it uses chats and coding sessions from Free, Pro and Max to improve its models only if you allow it in your privacy settings, if a conversation is flagged for safety review, or if you join a program such as its Trusted Tester Program. Incognito chats are never used. If you allow training, de-identified data can be kept for up to 5 years; a conversation you delete leaves your history at once and Anthropic's back-end storage within 30 days.
Gemini. Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub (updated October 26, 2026) says that while the Keep Activity setting is on, Google uses your chats and what you share, such as files and screens, to provide, develop and improve its services, including training generative models, with help from human reviewers. Reviewed data is disconnected from your account and kept for 3 years. Activity is deleted automatically after 18 months by default, which you can change to 3 or 36 months. With Keep Activity off, or in a temporary chat, chats are still kept for 72 hours, and temporary chats are not used for training.
In short: Claude starts from your choice in a setting; Gemini ties training to an activity setting you can switch off, and asks you not to enter anything you would not want a reviewer to see.
Which one to choose
- You live in Gmail, Docs and Drive: Google's Pro plan, for Gemini inside those apps and the storage.
- You write code most days: Claude Pro, because Claude Code comes in the plan; move to Max only if you hit the limits.
- You want the cheapest paid step: Google's Plus plan at $4.99; Claude has nothing between free and $20.
- You care most about training on your chats: compare the two settings above and decide which default you prefer.
- You are unsure: use both free plans for a week on your real tasks. Our Claude vs ChatGPT comparison completes the picture with the third big assistant.

What may change
- Anthropic and Google change plans, prices, limits and model names often; Google's page named different model versions per plan on the day we checked. This page is reviewed monthly.
- Usage limits are described as multiples (5x, 20x, 2x, 4x) without fixed message counts on either side.
- Prices are the US list prices; other countries see local currency and different tax treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude or Gemini better?
Neither in general. On price they are almost level: Claude Pro costs $20 a month and Google's Pro plan $19.99. Gemini is the better fit if you live in Gmail, Docs and Drive or want the storage; Claude if you write code, because Claude Code is included. Try both free plans on your own tasks.
