Short answer

Perplexity vs ChatGPT comes down to what you do most. Perplexity is built around web search: every answer has numbered citations, and its free plan allows practically unlimited basic searches plus 3 Pro Searches a day; Pro costs $17 a month billed annually. ChatGPT is a broader assistant for writing, code, voice and images that can also search with citations; its free plan has unlimited text chats with GPT-6, and Plus costs $20 a month. Prices checked October 8, 2026.

Prices and limits change often: check the vendor's page before you pay. How we make money.

Perplexity and ChatGPT overlap more every year, but they still start from different places. Perplexity calls itself an answer engine: every reply is built around a live web search and comes with numbered citations. ChatGPT is a general assistant for writing, coding, voice and images that can also search the web when a question needs current information. This comparison sets their plans, prices, search and citations, models, extra tools and privacy settings side by side, from each company's own pages as published on October 8 and 9, 2026, and ends with a simple way to decide which one to use or pay for.

We have not run a blind test of answer quality between the two. Where a claim is the vendor's own description of its product, we say so.

The short answer

Table: Perplexity or ChatGPT, by what you need

If you mostly need to... Start with Why
Look up facts and check where they come from Perplexity Every answer has numbered inline citations, and the free plan allows practically unlimited basic searches
Write, rewrite, brainstorm or code ChatGPT It is built as a general assistant; the free plan has unlimited text chats with GPT-6
Compare answers from several companies' models Perplexity Pro It lets you choose models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others in one subscription
Use voice, image creation and projects in one app ChatGPT Plus Voice, image creation, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs are part of the plan
Spend nothing Either Both free plans are usable every day; the limits differ (see below)

Perplexity's own FAQ draws the same line: it describes itself as built around real-time web search with citations and ChatGPT as a conversational chatbot, and suggests Perplexity for research and ChatGPT for creative tasks. That is the vendor's view, but it matches what the two products put first.

Plans and prices compared (October 2026)

Table: Perplexity and ChatGPT plans (checked October 8, 2026)

Tier Perplexity ChatGPT
Free Practically unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro Searches a day, 1 Research query a month, model picked for you, limited file uploads, no image generation Unlimited text chats with GPT-6 (subject to abuse guardrails), limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and memory
Low-cost Education Pro: $10 a month for verified students and educators Go: €8 a month as shown from Spain; may include ads
Main paid plan Pro: $17 a month, billed annually Plus: $20 a month, billed monthly (€23 as shown from Spain)
Top plan Max: $167 a month, billed annually Pro: $100, $200 or $500 a month
Business Enterprise Pro from $40 per seat a month ($400 a year) Business, from 2 users

Read the prices with care. Perplexity's plans page shows only the monthly equivalent of annual billing, so $17 and $167 assume you pay a year up front. OpenAI bills Plus monthly and offers annual billing only for Business and Enterprise. ChatGPT's pricing page shows the local currency of the country you visit from, which is why Go appears in euros from Spain. For the details of every ChatGPT tier, see our guide to ChatGPT pricing.

Search and citations: the real difference

Perplexity searches the web for every question. Its pricing page says every answer includes numbered inline citations that link to the original sources, and that clicking one expands a snippet so you can check the claim. Its help center lists "10x as many citations per answer" among the benefits of Pro. The free plan gives 3 Pro Searches a day (Perplexity's multi-step search) on top of unlimited basic searches, and 1 Research query a month for long reports; paid plans raise those limits.

ChatGPT searches the web when your question would benefit from current information, or when you choose Search in the tools menu. OpenAI's help center says web search is available on every plan, Free included, and even to people who are not signed in. Answers that use search "may include citations", and a Sources panel lists the pages it used.

Both companies add the same warning in different words. OpenAI says search results and citations "can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect" and tells you to open the cited source. A citation shows where a claim came from, not that the claim is right: language models can still misread a page, which is the problem we explain in why models hallucinate. Treat citations from either tool as a shortcut to the source, not as proof.

Which models do they use?

ChatGPT runs OpenAI's own models. On October 8 its pricing page listed GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna among the current models. The free plan includes unlimited text chats with GPT-6, Plus adds advanced reasoning models, and Pro adds "Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra".

Perplexity combines its in-house Sonar model with models from other companies and, by default, picks one for you. On the free plan the model is chosen for you; paid plans let you select it. On October 8 its plans page listed GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Haiku 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Kimi K3 and GLM 5.3. The FAQ on the same page and its help center named older versions (for example GPT-5.6 Terra, Claude Sonnet 5 or GPT-5.2), so check the model menu in the app before you pay for a specific model. If you mainly want Claude or Gemini, compare those assistants directly in Claude vs ChatGPT and ChatGPT vs Gemini.

Beyond answers: files, images and agents

Both products now do far more than answer questions:

  • Perplexity offers Computer, which builds apps, documents and other files from a request; Create files and apps for reports, spreadsheets and simple web apps (limited on Pro, extended on Max); an assistant in its Comet browser; image and video generation on paid plans; and up to 50 file uploads per project on Pro.
  • ChatGPT offers voice, image creation, deep research, memory, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs (projects and tasks from Plus), plus Codex for coding and ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile. Pro adds Dot, which OpenAI calls an always-on agent.

If your work is mostly documents and code rather than research, these extras matter more than search. Our ChatGPT alternatives guide compares the free tiers of other assistants for the same jobs.

Privacy: do they train on your questions?

On the consumer plans, both may use what you type to improve their models unless you switch it off:

  • Perplexity says that by default searches may be used to improve its models and that you can opt out at any time in Account Settings. Its Enterprise plans state that data is never used for model training, and its API has zero data retention.
  • ChatGPT's pricing page marks "Content is used to train our models" with "Opt-out available" for Free, Go, Plus and Pro. We explain where that setting is, and what the business plans promise, in is ChatGPT safe?.

For work data on either tool, use the business plan or turn off training before you paste anything confidential.

How to choose in ten minutes

  1. Write down five questions you really ask. Mix fact-finding (prices, rules, recent news) with tasks (a draft email, a summary, a piece of code).
  2. Ask both free versions the same five. For each fact, open one citation and check that the page says what the answer claims.
  3. Count where you hit a limit. On Perplexity, the 3 Pro Searches a day are the usual wall; on ChatGPT, it is uploads, images and deep research.
  4. Pay for one, keep the other free. Many people use Perplexity free for quick sourced lookups and pay for ChatGPT Plus, or the reverse if research is the job.
  5. Check the price you will really pay. Perplexity's $17 is an annual commitment of $204; ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month and can be cancelled monthly.

Neither is better in general: Perplexity is the faster route to an answer with sources, and ChatGPT is the broader assistant. Prices and limits change often, so this page is reviewed every quarter.
